Challenges

At HDB Bank, the need to ensure smooth operations during critical times required an efficient solution for migrating large files between our Data Center (DC) and Disaster Recovery (DR) locations. Given the increasing volume of data and the complexity of maintaining high availability, it became evident that traditional file transfer methods were not efficient enough.

The primary challenges included:

  • Large File Migration Between DC and DR: The process of moving large files, often several terabytes in size, between the main data center and the disaster recovery location was time-consuming and prone to delays, risking the bank’s ability to recover data quickly in case of emergencies.
  • Sharing Files Across Multiple Locations: The need to share files rapidly between the main storage and multiple users across various locations created logistical challenges. Transferring files efficiently, without compromising security or performance, was critical for ensuring that employees at different locations could access data swiftly for daily operations.
  • Latency and Bandwidth Limitations: Given the geographical spread of bank branches and remote users, the traditional file transfer solutions could not handle the speed and reliability required. Moreover, network latency and bandwidth limitations often led to incomplete transfers or long waiting times for file access, leading to inefficiencies in critical workflows.
  • Security Concerns: Transferring sensitive financial data across networks meant that security was a top priority. Ensuring that files were encrypted and that there were no breaches during transfer was a significant concern for HDB Bank.

solution brief

To address these challenges, HDB Bank decided to implement Aspera Solutions, a high-performance file transfer technology known for its ability to handle large data volumes securely and efficiently.

Key Steps in the Implementation:

Adoption of Aspera for High-Speed Transfers: Aspera patented FASP™ (Fast, Adaptive, Secure Protocol) was implemented for both migrating large files from the data center (DC) to disaster recovery (DR) and for fast sharing between various locations. The solution was designed to overcome bandwidth and latency limitations, enabling fast transfers regardless of distance.

Automation of File Transfers: To ensure smooth and reliable transfers, automated workflows were set up, allowing files to be transferred with minimal human intervention. These workflows included features for monitoring transfer status, error recovery, and resumption of interrupted transfers.

Ensuring Scalability and Flexibility: Aspera was deployed to handle a range of file sizes and formats, enabling scalability to meet future data transfer needs. Whether for migrating large backups, databases, or system images, the solution proved flexible enough to scale as the bank’s data demands grew.

Security and Compliance: Aspera built-in encryption capabilities ensured that all transferred files were secure, meeting stringent financial industry standards for data protection. The system also provided full auditing and logging features for compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements.

Integration with Existing Infrastructure: The Aspera solution was seamlessly integrated into the bank’s existing IT infrastructure, which included the main storage system, DR site, and user networks across various branches. This integration allowed for smooth user adoption and minimal disruption to day-to-day operations.
